FMU --- This custom-made 10-day trip was designed to offer my Spanish Inquisition class the opportunity to learn about the rich history of medieval Spain while immersing in the modern culture and blending with locals . In order to make the trip a unique learning experience focused on real cultural immersion, I skipped intermediares and planned the trip myself, making sure that all the business, events, meals, lodging, and transportation assistants were local. |

As a result, the trip was not only affordable, but a truly Spanish cultural experience to the group. We learned about the country's multicultural past by means of exposure to a diverse array of historical, artistic and cultural artifacts/events. We learned about the 'convivencia', and the so-called ‘three Spains’- Christian, Jewish and Muslim Spains-, which both shaped and became the foundation of present day Spain. In addition to the language experience and the contextual background for understanding the historical foundations of Spain, we had the opportunity to explore regional gastronomy, national literature, and local folklore, as well as contemporary pop culture and art, including architecture, sculpture, painting and dancing, from different time periods and styles. Towards the end of our trip, students had the opportunity to experience life as locals by performing activities such as grocery shopping, home cooking and engaging in informal conversations with local Spaniards.
